For his upcoming solo show at MW projects ‘You are Moving into me, you have to Leave Some of you Behind Which I have to Move into’, the Danish artist FOS will be presenting the 10th part of his project ‘Social Design’. Social Design’ is a continuing series of events and exhibitions, which address the possible relations between situation, performance, social interaction, objects and art.

The show will be a complete environment designed by the artist that aims to investigate social values and what FOS refers to as the “Accumulated Situation”. It will include various live elements. A bar that serves beer to viewers during the show while two Java Hill Mhyna’s birds will perch in a cage selected for its specific shape. There will also be various sculptures and objects all of which have evolved from the previous ‘Social Design’ project. On the opening night the artist, in collaboration with musician Mathew Simpson, will ‘The Rastafari H.C Anderson’.

Social Design’ number 10 examines the role of the art gallery in society. FOS sees the gallery being positioned among other institutions and organisations that present information. The gallery staff act as caretakers of the knowledge imbued in the work. FOS sees uniforms as a representation of a set of values constructed by a history of accumulated experiences. He has designed uniforms, to be worn by gallery staff, which will represent what the artist sees as the key values of art, the offering of models for different ways of living.

Each event or exhibition in the ‘Social Design’ series refers to ideas that have accumulated over the course of the project as a whole. As FOS puts it, “like the lime scale that builds up in a shower after use”.  These ideas involve notions of the social fabric, moments of conviviality and the accumulation of information.

FOS has re-designed architectural and social spaces, gallery spaces and art fair stands. He has also adapted architectural constructions in cafes and office spaces, as well as clubs and bar interiors as part of his ongoing projects. FOS (Thomas Poulsen) has organised numerous projects and exhibitions in Denmark and elsewhere in Europe.
