James White
United elements: New Work 2004
1 December 2004 – 22 January 2005
43B Mitchell Street
James White’s paintings can be seen as snapshots, images of things usually overlooked. These images are meticulously rendered in oil paint producing flawless photorealistic representations. The results of this arduous process are works that blur the boundaries between photography and painting, raising questions of representation and reproduction within art. However, White’s endeavours are invested in mundane moments from his everyday life, but they are moments that have significance for him. In a society of sensationalism, White’s paintings are unassuming. The works are painted onto plywood and then framed in Perspex cases; as a result they exist as objects sharing our physical space. Raising questions of consumerism and the object. The black and white palette is understated and highlights the astonishing aesthetic beauty of the works, also creating a common thread running through the paintings.
James White (b.1967 UK) has been included in numerous group and solo exhibitions, both in the UK and internationally, since 1992.
